My friend Susan W is just learning how to watercolor. To help her along, another friend, Leah, and I got together with her and sat on each side of her while we all painted our own versions of a bird from the same reference. This little cutie is a titmouse, but I improvised the branch and berries as I don't know what her preferred habitat is.

I machine-sewed the watercolor paper onto the lid of a box and filled it with pineapple guavas from my yard to give to Leah.

I was experimenting on another project, using the fabulous Japanese inks my husband got me for my birthday. I used a damp paper towel to blot my brush between ink changes. The ink residue migrated through the fibers and separated into its component pigments in a way I found beautiful and oddly intentional looking.
